Nova Scotia has three traditional styles of basketry, Micmac, European and black. Each group uses certain materials, and each group has their own technique which allows them to produce their own distinctive style of containers. Most baskets made by blacks are constructed from maple splints and the only dye used is a brown made from alder bark.
