In the nineteenth century, it was very difficult for blacks to obtain an education beyond learning merely to read and write. Very few black children finished high school and even fewer went on to university. James R. Johnston was one of the most successful. He was the first black to graduate from Dalhousie Law School, and he went on to become a successful lawyer and businessman. He also helped found the Nova Scotia Home for Colored Children.
