Once they were above the rapids, immigrants bound for the western part of the province could again take a steamer. The Great Britain, shown here tied to the wharf in Kingston in June, 1839, was a side-wheeler with two ninety-horse-power engines. She ran regularly from Prescott to Niagara. In 1831 she was advertised to complete a run from Niagara to Kingston, Brockville, and Prescott and back by York (Toronto) every five days. Cabin passengers paid $5.00 to $ 10.00 from Prescott to Niagara; deck passengers much less. In addition to passengers, the Great Britain carried, ashes, pork, flour, and livestock.
