By this time the pace of environmental change had slowed and people occupied more stable environments. Maritime Archaic people continued to push up the St. Lawrence and come in contact with the Laurentian Archaic people of the interior. Early in this period some Laurentian Archaic people also migrated eastward to the Atlantic coast of northern New England and New Brunswick. Towards the end of the period Shield Archaic hunters, spreading across northern Qu bec, penetrated to the Labrador coast and Susquehanna Archaic people of the Atlantic region appeared as far inland as the upper St. Lawrence River.
