The province by this time is beginning to take on its modern appearance. Glacial ice and the Tyrrell Sea, however, still occupy much of the northern section and a fresh water remnant of the former Champlain Sea is still extant in the upper St. Lawrence Valley. Southern plant species continue their shift northward with hardwood species such as sugar maple and yellow birch making their appearance.
