The great stone cairns of the Island of Ivik in the Ungava region of northern QuΘbec are thought to have functioned as navigational aids, although they may have served other purposes. It is not known who constructed them -- Late Palaeo-Eskimo people, later Thule Eskimos or their descendants, or, as has been suggested, Norsemen.
