This simplified floorplan of a longhouse excavated on the north side of the St. Lawrence River near Lanoraie illustrates some of the major features of these typical Iroquoian dwellings. The red areas down the centre of the house represent hearth floors which were shared by two families, one on either side of the house. The other features indicate the location of pits; these are coloured to identify the hearth with which they are believed to be associated.
