A 1634 visitor to an Oneida longhouse reported sixty to seventy salmon drying there. This is some indication of the importance of fish in the diet of the Iroquois. They were taken with hook and line, nets, spears, poisons, and in fish weirs and basketry traps as shown here. F.W. Waugh photographed the trap in use on the Six Nations Reserve during the First World War.
