The Confederacy Council continued to govern the Six Nations Reserve into this century. It is here shown in the Council House in Ohsweken, Ontario, in a photograph taken about 1910. Near the centre sits David John, Sr., an Onondaga chief, holding wampum strings. The traditional Confederacy Council was ousted by a faction supporting an elected council in 1924. The elected council receives official recognition from the Canadian government but a large portion of the bitterly divided reserve remains steadfast in its support of the traditional chiefs. Note the portraits of members of the Royal Family, Joseph Brant (far right) and the prominent Iroquois distance runner Tom Longboat (1887-1949) (far left). The room is also decorated with banners bearing clan symbols.
