A member of the Cayuga Society of Faces stands outside the Sour Springs Longhouse at the Six Nations Reserve prior to their public performance in the Midwinter Ceremony, January 30 -- February 7,1933. The turtle-shell rattle, staff and ragged clothing are traditional in the dress of this medicine society. Frank G. Speck has described the performance of masked dancers, including the handling of hot coals, in the 1933 Midwinter Ceremony in his work written in collaboration with Alexander General, Midwinter Rites of the Cayuga Long House (Philadelphia, 1949).
