This record, said to be as ancient as the circular roll-call wampum (slide 9), represents the nine Mohawk chiefs on the Confederacy Council. The nine pendants are in groups of three, for each of the three Mohawk clans had positions on the council. The first position in each clan is represented by a white string, the second by the string with two purple beads, and the third by the string with three purple beads. The first group, on the left, are titles held by the Turtle Clan. Hiawatha is the second of these titles, but out of deference to his role in founding the Confederacy his position has not been filled since his death. The next group is the Wolf Clan titles and the final three strings represent titles in the Bear Clan.
