This mid-eighteenth century sketch of the Mohawk settlement of Caughnawaga, near MontrΘal, illustrates a typical Iroquois village and surrounding fields. The Mohawks living here had converted to Catholicism and were persuaded to settle on the St. Lawrence. While the village plan may reflect some French influence it is essentially aboriginal in character.
