Hundreds of similar carvings on bedrock outcrops and boulders are known along the Northwest Coast, most of which can neither be well dated nor clearly interpreted. Some may be thousands of years old, and they probably served a wide range of functions, from secret shaman's rituals to ownership markers. This human (?) figure, pecked on a hard horizontal bedrock surface, shows ribs and backbone in "X-ray" style. The compass serves as a scale.
