As this photograph indicates, overcrowding became a serious problem in mental hospitals. Clean and well-lit wards like this one at the Longue Pointe Asylum near Montreal were, nevertheless, a far cry from the cells that housed the insane early in the century. Only wealthy patients had access to private quarters in the modern asylum.
