  3.      Literature on Maritime workers tends to be specific rather than general in orientation. There is not even any suitable survey of the social and economic history, though W.S. McNutt's The Atlantic Provinces: The Colonial Experience, 1813-1857 (Toronto: McClelland and Stewart, 1964) is a useful introduction to the pre-Confederation experience.

  5.      Desmond Morton and Terry Copp's well-written and profusely illustrated Working People: An Illustrated History of Canadian Labour, revised edition (Ottawa: Deneau and Greenberg, 1984) provides a limited treatment of Maritime themes, as does Eugene Forsey's massive Trade Unions in Canada, 1812-1902 (Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1981), though it is more catalogue than analysis. The best overall bibliography is The Labour Companion (Toronto: New Hogtown Press, 1981). Acadiensis and Labour/Le Travail (formerly Labour/Le Tavailleur) include regular surveys and reviews of the current literature concerning the history of Maritime workers.
