A woman's costume, typical for Labrador Inuit of the eighteenth century, is depicted in this oil painting done by Angelica Kauffman (1740-1807) between 1766 and 1781. Although the artist was never in Labrador, it would appear, from the careful depiction of the clothing, that she did at least have access to a complete outfit. The large boots, said to be capable of holding a small child, were mentioned by several early explorers in Labrador; however, it was not Inuit custom to "pin" the hood beneath the chin as shown in this painting.
