This photograph shows children coming aboard to explore a CMR coastal vessel during one of its brief stops at Hopedale in the summer of 1976. These vessels, which carry both passengers and freight, make regular visits to coastal communities between St. John's and Main from July to November each year. Together with scheduled air service, telephones and television, they have broken down the isolation of Labrador Inuit communities, whose main link with the outside world was once the annual arrival of the Moravian sailing ship from London.
