Although the precise origins of grasswork in Labrador have not yet been traced, it is known that the Inuit have been producing a variety of grass mats and baskets in this sewn-coil technique for well over a century. Once marketed through such organizations as the Moravian Mission and the International Grenfell Association, grasswork is still produced by several Inuit craftspeople. This specimen, which features bands of open-work pattern on the side and rim, was collected in Hamilton Inlet for the National Museum of Canada around 1914.
