Since the late nineteenth century, when "loater" fishermen from Newfoundland purchased large quantities of salt cod from Inuit summer camps along the outer Labrador coast, fishing has been an important source of earned income. After cod became scarce in the late 1960s, Inuit fishermen began to harvest more Atlantic salmon and arctic char. The fishermen in this photograph are preparing to row part of their catch to a collector boat, which will transport it to the fish plant at Main.
