Mikak and Tutauk were taken to England after being captured in 1767 in a skirmish with British sailors near Cape Charles in southern Labrador. Later returned to Labrador, they were living in the Main area when the Moravians established their first mission there in 1771. In this oil painting by John Russell, Mikak wears a brass coronet and beaded hair pendants, both fashionable among Labrador nut women of her day. Also typical are the tattooed lines on her brow, cheeks and chin.
