The skin-covered kayak normally employed for hunting sea mammals and birds near coastal settlements was also used for spearing caribou at inland lakes. Kayaks started to decline in numbers and importance in the late nineteenth century as more and more Labrador Inuit abandoned them in favour of wooden boats. This photograph was taken in Okak Bay around 1910; just two decades later, kayaks had almost disappeared from the coast of Labrador. Photograph by S.K. Hutton.
