Before they began to use snow-shoes in the late eighteenth century, the Labrador Inuit had difficulty travelling in the interior where soft snow accumulated in the patches of forest found in low-lying areas. The snow-shoe was adopted from neighbouring Indian groups. The pair held here by this young woman, photographed at Main in 1922, is of the Montagnais Maskapi "swallow-tail" variety.
