Although the Labrador Inuit traditionally spent the greater part of the winter in sod-covered houses, they also made snow houses when the need arose. Small houses with only one dome, such as the one being constructed in this photograph, were used as temporary shelters on overnight hunting trips. Several domes of this type could be joined by a common entrance tunnel and used by families camped at a good hunting location for a longer period of time. In the pre-mission period, sometimes all the Inuit from one settlement worked together to build a very large snow house or communal feasting and recreation.
