Makkovik is a bi-ethnic community founded as a Moravian mission station in 1896. It is composed mostly of "settlers" of European ancestry and Inuit from various parts of the Labrador coast. The Inuit population was enlarged considerably in 1959 after fourty Inuit faamilies were relocated to Makkovik when the mission at Hebron closed.
