Thanks to government telegraph lines, Canadians had almost instant information about the events in the Northwest. This headline, typical of those that summoned ardent young volunteers to drill sheds in Ottawa, MontrÄal and QuÄbec, appeared in the Toronto Mail the day after Duck Lake.
As Minister of the Militia, Adolphe Caron's skill and energy helped to conceal the fact that the Canadian militia was hopelessly unprepared for a serious military effort.
