For both Indians and MΘtis, the buffalo provided food, clothing, shelter and fuel. The buffalo hunt was also away of life. As the hunt was central to the values and institutions of prairie life, no single factor contributed more to the 1885 rebellion than the extinction of the buffalo. By 1880, the vast herds that were the basis for survival there had been wiped out by massive slaughters for pleasure and profit.
