On 26 May Poundmaker and his band surrendered to Middleton at Battleford. One of Otter's artillery officers, Captain R.W. Rutherford, chose to re-create the scene in this formal oil painting that shows, on the right, most of the major military figures involved in the campaign as well as Middleton's interpreter, Tom Hourie. Poundmaker served two years of a three year prison term for his role in the rebellion. Eight of the eleven Indians convicted of murder were hanged.
