When he insisted that the CPR could deliver the troops, William Van Horne could have had only a vague idea of the conditions north of Lake Superior. This sketch by a journalist with the 10th Royal Grenadiers, a Toronto unit, gives a vivid impression of the march across one of the gaps. All four gaps amounted to a distance of more than one hundred and sixty kilometres.
