Great quantities of materials such as metal, rubber, fat and grease were in short supply. On the home front, civilians were encouraged to save materials like these which could be recycled. Aluminum was in such demand, especially by the aircraft industry, that the manufacture for domestic use of aluminum utensils and tinfoil was prohibited.
Children became ardent supporters of the scrap collection drives and were offered incentives such as free admission to movies. Here, Winnipeg children show the cooking utensils they have salvaged. Even though all things gathered were not converted into useful items, collecting them made many feel involved in the war effort.
