Military recruitment and war industries absorbed much of the manpower normally available for farm labour. But during wartime, as this poster indicates, food production requirements were even greater than in peacetime. To ensure an adequate supply of agricultural products for "our armed services," "our home population," "the United Nations" and "rescued peoples" the Department of Labour issued this call for all citizens to help with farm work.
Students were a major source of farm labour. They put in long hours in return for minimal pay, especially during the harvest.
