Dorset Eskimos carved rectangular bowls from this large outcrop of soapstone between about 1,800 and 1,500 years ago. Each of the small depressions in the rock face marks a spot where a bowl was removed. Although little remains from their work except the scars from bowl removal and a few rough tools used to carve the bowls, archaeologists have enabled the artist to reconstruct the scene shown in the following illustration (slide 22).
