Laurentian Archaic Culture (3,000 to 6,000 years ago).
Although, like the Plano, the influence of the Laurentian people does not appear to have been widespread, there is evidence of the presence of the Laurentian culture in the Maritimes between 5,000 and 6,000 years ago. One of the few areas of the Maritimes where Laurentian finds have come to light is in the Spednik Lakes area of southwestern New Brunswick. A major technological innovation occurring at this time was a well-developed ground stone industry. There is also a greater variety of tool types, both utilitarian and ornamental, represented. Much of this new tool inventory would appear to be connected to an increasingly specialized woodworking industry.
Illustrated here are objects from the Spednik Lakes, New Brunswick:
A Ground slate object
B Stone plummet (weight for nets)
C-E Stone projectiles
F-G Ground stone gouges
H-J Ground slate ulus (cutting knives)
