A prehistoric fishing scene at a fish weir has been recreated by the artist. Scenes like this would have been common on saltwater estuaries and rivers in the Maritimes 1,100 years ago. Nets like the one shown would have been strung across narrow channels where the tidal, two-way flow of current would serve to draw fish into the nets. The nets were probably moveable. Ethnohistorical evidence, including impressions on ceramics and prehistoric man's accepted knowledge of knot-making, points to the existence of prehistoric nets, as do the numbers and variety of fish bones found at the camping sites. The spear depicted by the artist is a traditional Micmac design employed in catching eels.
