Although there is no direct evidence of the existence of boats in prehistoric times, the fact that early peoples were known to have journeyed across water and to have caught offshore marine mammals are indications that they possessed the means to travel over water. Walrus and seal bones recovered suggest that sea mammal hunting was a major activity. Here the artist has portrayed a late winter or early spring seal hunting scene near the MacDonald site in northeastern Prince Edward Island.
