The Maritimes region is a term that refers to the coastal areas of the Atlantic shore, including all of the three Maritime provinces and parts of the QuÄbec shoreline. It is a region of comparatively low relief, the interior of New Brunswick, GaspÄ and the Cape Breton Highlands excepted. The predominantly shallow waters of the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence and the Continental Shelf drop abruptly away to the deeper (dark blue) North Atlantic Ocean.
