Only the St. Johns Stone Chinaware Company, founded in 1873, at St. Johns (now St. Jean), QuΘbec, made any sustained attempt to compete with the imported tablewares. "Stone china" was only one of a number of contemporary names for an ironstone-type body. Most of the wares made at St. Johns were all white, like the tureen by Ridgway, Bates & Co., shown in illustration 14. In the case of these pieces, however, the body itself was coloured. The MontrΘal Gazette mentioned St. Johns blue ware in 1879, so it was in production by then.
