In the pre-industrial economy, trades were passed on by means of the apprenticeship system. A master craftsman would take a young boy into his home and teach him all the secrets of his trade. Often, as in this case, the apprentice was the craftsman's own son: here, Groleau, a blacksmith in Saint-Victor, Beauce County, and his son are shown with their anvil.
