In order to accommodate the considerable increase in available manpower caused by industrialization, huge factories had to be built. In late nineteenth-century QuÄbec, industrial structures which, in general, were not very pleasing to the eye, began to spring up in MontrÄal and other industrial centres such as QuÄbec City, Sherbrooke, Sainte-Hyacinthe, and Valleyfield. This engraving from L'Opinion publique (February 26, 1874) shows the Hudon cotton mill in Hochelaga County, near the port of MontrÄal, East MontrÄal. You can see clearly the tall smokestack adjoining the room which houses the steam engine, the source of power for all the factory's machine tools. The various departments of the factory are located on different floors of the main building.
