The use of the gas turbine contributed greatly to the mechanization of artisans' workshops at the turn of the century, especially since electricity was not widely available in rural areas before 1930. This picture shows a joiner-carpenter at work in a reconstruction of a "transition" workshop in the late nineteenth century: the gas turbine has replaced the windmill as the source of power for machine tools such as the circular saw and the turner. The machine tools are all connected to the turbine by means of driving-belts.
