The worker in this picture is responsible for overseeing a large number of spinning machines at the Dominion Textile Company factory in Verdun. As you can see, there was already a fair degree of mechanization in the textile industry by the early twentieth century. Some employees, rather than working directly on machine tools, simply watched over the machines. This situation foreshadowed the automation stage which would occur in some industries beginning in the 1950s.
