As there was no printing press at Louisbourg nor elsewhere in New France for that matter the residents did not have a newspaper. When it was necessary to inform people of important news, forthcoming events, or recently issued proclamations and ordinances, notices were posted at prominent locations throughout the town. In this re-created scene a soldier, under the watchful eye of a sergeant, fastens a copy of the 1744 declaration of war against Great Britain (illustration 28) to the door of the king's storehouse (magasin), as townspeople look on and await the news.
Since the storehouse contained all government-owned food, supplies and equipment, a sentry was regularly posted at the entrance to control access. A sentry box (guÄrile) was provided to protect the man on duty against inclement weather.
