The quarters available to an officer who chose to live in the barracks contrasted sharply with those of an ordinary soldier. Fine furniture and linens offered a style of living more in keeping with his position in society. Many officers who lived in town occupied relatively modest houses, but some of Louisbourg's most imposing dwellings belonged to members of the officer class.
