This long row of tenement houses is typical of the older and better quality living quarters in the North End in 1909 when the photograph was taken. Board sidewalks, though, were an unusual luxury. This type of housing was occupied by an ethnically mixed group, the members of which usually had better paying positions in skilled trades. The crowding, however, indicates that landlords and developers sought maximum utilization of their land.
