In contrast to Main Street, this photograph illustrates the much more familiar pattern of North End shopping, the local market. This one, Dufferin market in 1918, was a very active and lively scene on Saturday mornings when immigrant women went for supplies. Local farmers (modern day market gardeners) brought vegetables and poultry to these sites. The farmers were invariably immigrants themselves and the result was a confusing, colourful babel. The familiar peasant dress of blouse and babushka was everywhere.
