Canadian churches, both Protestant and Roman Catholic, actively sought immigrant parishioners, and they were frequently effective agents of acculturation. The Methodist Church sponsored three All Peoples' Missions in the North End, supervised by J.S. Woodsworth. They were service oriented. This photograph shows one of the missions. Note the advertisement for night school classes in Polish, Russian and Ukrainian.
The North End missions, the Protestant ones especially, attempted to attract immigrant children such as those shown here. It was believed that the youngsters could be "Canadianized" much more quickly than their parents. To some immigrants, membership in the dominant Protestant churches was a way of being accepted in the new land.
