Beaver hats were a fashionable item in eighteenth and nineteenth century Europe. The top row of cocked hats (left to right), the Continental Hat, the Naval Cocked Hat and the Clerical Hat, were popular styles of the eighteenth century. Stove pipe hats were a nineteenth century fashion. Illustrated here (second row) are the Paris Beau, the Wellington and the D'Orsay, (third row) the Regent, and an army hat. It was largely on the strength of the demand for beaver pelts to make hats that the fur trade in Canada flourished.
