Only a few of the thousands of Nova Scotia's nineteenth-century miners owned their own homes; indeed, few had any real property. While the rent for a company unit might be only a few dollars a month, the arrangement still represented a substantial area of control by the firm. The G.M.A.'s successors vigorously pursued this domination and successfully gained control of an even greater portion of the mining communities' real property.
