By the end of the nineteenth century, as this photograph clearly shows, conditions in barracks had improved considerably. The men added personal touches which differentiated their quarters from other barrack rooms and the number living in each room was significantly reduced by regulation. In the barracks, pottery dishes replaced the old mess tins which were still in use when the army was on the march. As can be seen here, the common arrangement was to have beds along the walls, and tables and benches in the middle of the room.
