These two deserters had set out from St. Andrews, New Brunswick hoping to slip into Maine. Like many of their colleagues, they fled in their uniforms and were optimistic that, if caught, they would be considered as absent without leave and thus receive a light sentence. According to the officers serving in Canada, Scottish soldiers were the most successful deserters as they tended to plan their bid for freedom, rather than running off in an impulsive manner.
