  1. Drying the Bone on Deck.

  3.      If the baleen was not dry, it might rot. In this photograph, taken in 1912, the individual pieces are given an airing during the voyage home. One edge of the baleen is fringed. This portion of the baleen was used as stuffing in the manufacture of furniture, as well as for nets and brushes
